Sport: Athlete's year of effort wasted as he misses triathlon for ridiculous reason

An athlete spent a year training and fundraising for a triathlon, only to miss the big race after oversleeping.

The luckless man involved was one Jody George, who was due to take on the Challenge Weymouth Triathlon in support of Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Having pestered friends and family for sponsorship for months and put his body through a testing training regime, Jody was all geared up to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and then run a full marathon.

But on the day, his best laid plans went horribly awry.

As Jody told the Daily Mail: “I set the alarm on my phone for 3am. It went off but I hit snooze, as I normally do. The only trouble was I hadn't switched on the snooze facility for the new time. I went back to sleep, and the next thing was the alarm going off at five to six.

“I held the phone in my hands and looked at the time for a while in disbelief. I knew instantly that was it. I was in total shock. I just went downstairs and made a cup of tea and said to my fiancĂ©e PJ, 'that's that, I'm not racing today’.
